F&B UPDATE - STEVE SHERIDAN
Hello everyone, As we approach the halfway mark of our season, it’s incredible to look back and reminisce about all the wonderful activities we’ve enjoyed at Cullasaja Club. Despite a mostly dry season, the rain did impact several of our July events, but we were able to pivot and make these experiences even better for you and your families and friends. We kicked off with a fantastic week of Fourth of July celebrations. Congratulations to all who won at Family Bingo Night! It was delightful to see so many families come together and enjoy the fun. The kids had a blast at Kids Day on July 3rd at the Activity Center with a DJ, games, and plenty

of dancing. July 4th turned out to be one of our largest food and beverage events ever hosted at Cullasaja Club, thanks to our wonderful families and the exceptional offerings that everyone wanted to share with their loved ones.
Although the rain made us adjust our plans, we still had a fantastic time with bouncy houses and snow cones on the back lawn, dodging thunderstorms. The Cart Parade was a colorful and joyous event, and we moved the Duck Race to earlier in the day to avoid the rain, which worked out perfectly. Our Clubhouse lunch was a hit, with delicious food enjoyed by all generations.
The Strawberries and Cream Tennis Mixer was very well attended at the new tennis pavilion. It was a beautiful sight to see so many members enjoying fresh strawberries and cream while mingling with friends and family. We closed the week with Patriot Play Croquet, which featured fun, food, and festivities on our lush croquet lawns. Thursday nights in July were lively with great live music in the bar, drawing reservations in the hundreds. The atmosphere was electric as members enjoyed fantastic performances while sipping their favorite drinks. We concluded the month with our largest golf tournament of the season, the Men’s Golf Invitational. Despite some rain, we executed all our services seamlessly, impressing our guests with our adaptability and dedication. The tournament was a huge success, and the evening ended with dancing to Papa Soul, a fantastic band from Atlanta which carried the night away with soulful tunes and energetic performances.

F&B UPDATE
As we look forward to the second half of our season in August, we have a full calendar of events planned for our members. A gentle reminder about our Cullasaja Club dress code: Daytime Clubhouse Attire after 11:00 a.m. “Country Club Casual Attire” is the standard used for day-to-day wear in the Clubhouse. This includes collared golf or button-down shirts, “Tommy Bahama" or "UnTucked” brand shirts (aka camp shirts), knee-length shorts, “Country Club” denim that is properly sized, in excellent condition, consistent in color, and does not include holes, rips, or frayed material, and tennis attire and workout attire with sleeves. Denim is not permitted at the Golf Facility, Croquet Facility or Tennis Facility. All shirts should remain tucked-in, with the exception of “camp shirts” with banded waistline and equal hem designed to be worn over belt/pants. Evening Clubhouse Attire after 6:00 p.m. “Country Club Casual Attire” is also permitted in the evenings in the Bar and the two covered outdoor dining patios. The dress code is different in the Sweetwater Dining Room (white linen tablecloths). Gentlemen should wear slacks, button-down shirts, golf shirts, or camp shirts. Jackets/Sport Coats are suggested, but not required for gentlemen on Saturday evenings in the Sweetwater Room. Ladies attire should be equivalent when dining in the Sweetwater Room. Golf Course & Practice Area Attire - At All times Appropriate golf attire is required for all players while playing the course or practicing on the range or practice facilities. The clothing offered in the Golf Shop and featured in golf industry publications is representative of what is expected on the golf course and practice areas, excluding t-shirts, workout attire, sweatpants and sweatshirts. On the golf course and the driving range, men must wear shirts with collars and sleeves, and all shirts should be tucked in at all times. Ladies must wear golf dresses, shirts, slacks, golf shorts, and blouses. Golf shorts must be Bermuda-length. If you are in doubt concerning your attire, please check with the Starter or Golf Pros prior to playing or practicing. Hats/Headwear All hats must be worn facing forward at all times. Gentlemen must remove their hats when entering the Clubhouse. Ladies are permitted to wear hats inside.
Thank you for adhering to these policies and maintaining our great Club culture.

GOLF UPDATE - CHARLES BEURMANN
We had an awesome July 4th week on the course. It was great to see all the family members here enjoying their summer! We had so many fun events and crowned many new champions. Our WGA Interclub was a tremendous success. We had 94 ladies attend, which, according to my records, was the most we have ever had. Thank you to the WGA for everything they did to make the event such a successful one. We are hosting 9-Hole interclub on August 13th at 10:30 a.m. If you would like to participate, please contact the starter to sign up. The men’s interclub against Burlingame was not as exciting. Our men played their hearts out, but Burlingame was too strong. They were defeated 17 ½ to ½ at

Burlingame on July 13th. Please join us for our next match against High Hampton on August 14th & 15th. Our annual Couples Cup was contested on Sunday July 14th. Congratulations to our 18-Hole Champions, Jill & Jim Huston and Susan & Tom Ward on their impressive modified best ball score of 118. Their score was six strokes better than our second-place team Georgie & Rick Taylor and Cindy & Jack Kuykendall. Christa & John Chain and Karen & Andy Robets won our 9-Hole division shooting a modified best ball 58! Thank you to all that participated. Our second WGA major tournament is in the books! Congratulations to Presidents Cup winners! Susan Ward won our 18-hole division and Ann Julian won our 9-Hole division. I hope all WGA ladies can join us for the Patriots Cup on July 30th. Please note that this event was rescheduled to July 30th instead of August 6th. Many of our ladies will be traveling to Highlands Country Club for interclub so this date change will allow more ladies to enjoy our Ryder Cup inspired major. Unfortunately, Mother Nature cut short our July Shoot-out after two holes. We encourage everyone to come out for our final Shoot-Out on August 24th at 4pm. Even if you don’t want to play, it’s fun to grab a cocktail and watch the fireworks! We have our first ever “Three Club” tournament Friday, August 2nd. The format will be Better Ball of Partners at 100% handicap. Grab a friend and sign up for this remarkable opportunity to test your skills and patience. If you are interested in participating, please contact the starter with your team. Time will tell if anyone can take down defending Club Champion, Clay Alliston! The 2024 Club Championship will be contested on August 9th & 10th. Please sign up if you wish to test your skills against the Club’s best players. Join us at Kellermans for the 2024 WGA Member-Guest on August 22nd & 23rd, which will be our final invitational event of the year. Our Dirty Dancing themed event is going to be one you don’t want to miss. Please contact Chairwoman, Karen Robert,s if you are interested in playing and don’t have a partner. The 2024 Men’s Invitational was one for the record books! Mother nature threw everything she had at us. Hats off to all the men that grinded through the difficult conditions. Greg Pater & Rick Crawford played their hearts out, but Jim Moore & Bob Fisher were just too tough. The shootout ended in a tie requiring us to play a sudden death hole. The drama proved too intense making the two teams play two sudden death holes. Congratulations Jim and Bob, you truly are deserving champions!

FROM THE GREEN - TOM NELSON
From the Green
What’s going on with the rough? August is a great month to focus on the roughs. Historically, we have had the most successful inter-seeding projects due to the days beginning to get shorter and the temperature starting to fall. Our seeding efforts will be concentrated on areas that struggled during the dry spell we encountered during the month of June into July. These areas are mostly comprised of bent grass, that does not perform well at the rough height of cut, when conditions get hot and dry. I view it as a great opportunity to establish a more desirable stand of turf that will perform better the next time we have dry weather conditions.
Tom Nelson Golf Course Superintendent
We will also be working on making herbicide applications to the newly renovated rough areas in an effort to slow down the bent grass intrusion. Our microclimate in Highlands, makes it challenging to keep a monostand in the roughs. In the areas installed during phase I of our renovation project, we can already see a significant amount of bent grass creeping in. The herbicide used will cause the undesirable turf to turn white and cease growth. It takes a total of 3 applications each 2 weeks apart. While it is a bit unsightly, it is the best long-term approach to keeping these areas clean and giving that great color contrast between the dark green rough and lighter green bent grass fairways. In the picture you can see the small patches of bent grass invading the new sod behind the fourth green. July and August also bring dollar spot issues in the rough. Dollar spot is a fungus that forms on the leaf blades and causes the turf to look dead. Fortunately, it does not attack the crowns of the plant and the turf will recover once we spray for it, or conditions become less favorable for dollar spot to thrive. The new roughs are much more naturally resistant to this fungus. The picture shows an area where new sod was installed, you can clearly see the old turf on the left with heavy dollar spot infestation and the new sod on the right is completely unaffected. Sincerely, Tom Nelson Golf Course Superintendent

Can you believe that it is August already?! The first half of the season has flown by, and July has been particularly memorable for our croquet program. We celebrated a great social event with our 4th of July Patriots Play Croquet Mixer, where everyone donned red, white, and blue attire and enjoyed friendly games on the lawns and court-side cocktails. Following the Patriots’ Croquet event, we ventured to the Chattooga Club for an Interclub match. Our team showcased skill and teamwork across three tough rounds, emerging victorious amidst beautiful lawns and strong competition. This victory was particularly special because we lost the first round 3 games to 1. Our members re-grouped, and proceeded to then sweep the remaining two rounds to win 8 of the 8 games played, giving us the win! The day concluded with a delightful lunch.

July also saw thrilling matches in our Club Championships. In the Ladies’ Doubles Championship, we saw a team of two ladies who were making their competitive croquet debut. Nancy Ferrara and Lisa Butts were the surprise team this year, making it all the way to the final. In the final, they met against Jacquie Harris and Emily Adkins. Experience prevailed in this one, victory going to Jacquie and Emily with a score of 7-3. Next up was the Men’s Doubles Championship, marked by unexpected results early on as our top seeded teams underestimated their competition and dropped their first matches. Dr. Page and Rev. Walker came out of the block stage shooting for the stars, as they qualified to the semi-finals without dropping a game. Steve Earman and Tom Guffey had other plans for them though, taking the game to them and winning by a score of 7-2, setting up the final against Tim Wright and Dennis Fisher. This was another final for the books, a good mix of two teams with both having experience on their side. Dr. Fisher was able to follow up the good performance by his partner, current singles champion Tim Wright, and cruise through to victory. Congratulations to Tim Wright for his repeat in Doubles, and to Dennis Fisher, for his first Club Championship win. Lastly, we closed July with the Ladies Singles Club Championship. A great two days of croquet where 8 ladies battled on the lawn for this coveted title. We had strong contenders looking to make their mark and earn their first Club Championship. Terry Fisher and Barbara Knight had great moments on the lawn. Both of them hitting impressive jump shots at critical moments. The semi-finals were very exciting, one of them went the distance, with a 7-6 score going to Jacquie Harris, setting up a repeat final from last season against 3-time Club Champ, Julie Wright. A beautiful match between two friends and avid competitors. It’s definitely not easy playing finals and semi-finals against a familiar opponent. They know each other’s game well enough that it could make it more challenging to outsmart one another. The match was neck and neck all the way, until hoop 8. A slight loss of concentration from Jacquie, opened the opportunity to Julie, making it 4-4 going into hoop 9. I felt a slight shift in momentum here, and Julie capitalized by staying ahead the rest of the way, finally closing the match 7 to 5. Many congratulation to all players and huge thanks to all of our spectators. Looking ahead, our final Club competition is the Men’s Singles Club Championship. We are looking forward to a fully subscribed roster for this one, so if you haven’t signed up for it already, gents, please do so. Thank you to all of you who make this program special. Looking forward to creating more lasting moments with you all.
Warm regards, Brian Lozano Croquet Director

Please email or call the Croquet Shop to check availability and to make a court reservation in advance to guarantee your space. Reservations for croquet lawns may be made through the Cullasaja App. Except for weekly scheduled events and inter-club events, lawns may be reserved up to 5 days in advance for a period of one and a half hours. During holiday weekends and/or during peak times, courts may be double banked whenever necessary. Lawns available for play from 8:00 a.m. until dusk. Each day, there are scheduled events that will take up lawn space. CROQUET RULES & REGULATIONS REMINDER The most up to date Croquet Rules & Regulations are in the back of your printed Member Directory for easy access at any time. Please reference these rules if you are not sure of the etiquette and expectations while on the lawns. All white attire is required for any sanctioned CCA event, and the normal Club-wide dress code is in effect during other times on the lawns. Please keep all shirts tucked in and baseball hats facing forward. For those wishing to play casually, please consult the dress code section of the Croquet Rules section of the Directory. TENNIS NEWS - CHRIS HARRIS
Chris Harris Tennis Director MID-SEASON 2024 TENNIS SEASON REMAINS VIBRANT: Warmer temperatures of July brought out plenty of tennis playing members to our courts the past few weeks. We had over a hundred tennis players out the week of July 4th alone. A pleasant surprise has been the increase in popularity of Heather and Kate’s Junior clinics and lessons this July. Participation in our ladies’ tennis interclubs at local country clubs has also been very popular. We’ve already had 4 interclubs at Mountain Laurel, Mountain Top, Cedar Creek and High Hampton. I think the ladies have enjoyed meeting new tennis playing friends and the experience of seeing different clubs throughout the mountain range. OUR SECOND ANNUAL, RED & BLUE TOURNAMENT AND HAPPY HOUR WAS A BIG HIT MID JULY.
Scott Taylor’s Red Team including Scott, Heather Bell, Joe Sewell, Bianca Yohe, Mary Wilding, Don Feibelman, JoEllen Ross and Deb Hartman won 69 games total beating Jane Adam’s Blue team with a score of 44. Rather than prizes for the winners, we had the losing team host a Happy Hour for all of our tennis playing members on our new tennis shop deck with homemade appetizers. All that joined really loved this new event, especially the Red team.
CLINICS CONCLUDE FOR THE 2024 SEASON Clinics have been very popular with Members and their guests this season. It has been exciting to see youth on the courts, learning, playing and having fun. Heather will look to continue to grow the youth program during the 2025 Season. Keep an eye out for these future stars coming out of this program. LADIES’ INTERCLUB MATCHES So far, we have seen a growing interest and participation in tennis interclub matches. Chris has worked hard to forge relationships with other clubs on the plateau which has fostered the opportunity for our lady players to play and compete at Mountain Laurel, Mountain Top, High Hampton as well as Cedar Creek so far this season. If you are interested in playing in one of these matches, contact Chris Harris or sign-up on the Member App when they are posted.

They played 3 regular sets with add making for a long morning of tennis to test their abilities against the competition. With a score of 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 Bianca Yohe, and her daughter Caroline, were declared this year’s Ladies’ Doubles Champions. Congratulations ladies!
MENS INTERCLUB HOME VS. MOUNTAIN LAUREL Friday, August 16th | 2pm
DOUBLES TIP OF THE MONTH: How to avoid having to hit lobs or being lobbed? Most players hate having to hit lobs because they get out of their comfort zone. If you are one of them, here's a simple tip to avoid getting lobbed: hit your ground-strokes and approach shots with under-spin. This makes it hard for opponents to get under the ball and hit it high because the ball stays low off the ground and the backwards spin does not favor lobs. It climbs down their racquet face somewhat. Also, good lobbers love to park themselves on the baseline because it’s easy to hit lobs from this position. You have to take a lobber out of their comfort zone. You can jam them with your return by hitting the ball right in front of them so they can’t get into position to swing or hit a shorter ball that makes it harder for them to get into position to hit a winning lob. Just don’t hit the ball too short as that would bring them into net for a volley or overhead smash. And last, don’t close the net too tight on an approach shot. This will be the first men’s interclub of the 2024 season as we look to host Mountain Laurel. There will possibly be a small happy hour at the Clubhouse bar afterwards depending on availability and interest. Please signup for this event via the Member App.
Warm regards, Chris Harris Tennis Director

WELLNESS, MIND, BODY - ELIZABETH HOLT
I hope everyone is enjoying and relishing their summer at Cullasaja Club. The Activity Center has been hopping, especially during the Fourth of July, and overall usage of the Activity Center has been very “Health Productive”. We extend our gratitude to Manu and Heather for a great Fourth of July Family 5K Run. It was a great success! Winning the race and setting our course record was Zach Huston, finishing with a blistering time of 22:02. This is simply an incredible feat! Help us welcome back Pamela Tubbs for the month of August with two Tai Chi classes. Pamela’s first class will be called Bamboo Fusion which will be on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. This class will be held in the downstairs classroom of the Activity Center. Bamboo Fusion is a

harmonious blend of Qigong, Tai Chi and standing Hatha Yoga while cultivating mindfulness and the surrender of both body and mind. The regular practice of Bamboo Fusion may aid in stress management, improve balance, and increase flexibility and joint mobility. Pamela’s second class will be at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesdays, outdoors preferably, depending on the weather, and it will be called Tai Chi for Health. Join this class for fun, easy, follow along Tai Chi flow. Experience balance and harmony through the slow, beautiful movements of Qigong and Tai Chi. Moved from worry and striving to living with ease, effortlessness and joy. No prior Tai Chi experience is necessary. Both classes will begin on Wednesday, July 31 and continue through the month of August. Also, happily returning is Cath Connolly in August with a new class called Painting For Everyone 2. This class will take place each Wednesday at the 1785 House from 12:45 to 2:45 PM. The workshop is especially designed for beginners or those who recently took her classes. This four-part workshop is a deep dive into an impressionistic perspective on painting the landscape. Please register on the Cullasaja Member App if you want to participate. We have two new equipment additions in the Activity Center. We now have a new Technogym Posterior Stretch Machine located in the Cardio Room. This machine is great to do timed stretches on your hamstrings and hips with a feature that lets you see the range of motion. We have also added a new Life Fitness Treadmill in the Cardio Room that replaces one that stopped working. We hope you enjoy these new pieces of equipment. Manu, Brian and I continue to be busy with massage, but we would love to see new faces
enjoying this remarkable amenity. If you’re interested in a massage, please contact one of us in the Activity Center. Also, we are available for personal training, and I am available to help you with our Pilates Reformer which has been very popular. Thank you and we hope to see you at the Activity Center in August. Yours in Health,
