GM COMMENTS – CHRIS CONNER, CCM, CCE

As we enter the month of August, the staff and I want to thank you for your support of the Club. To a “T”, we are all grateful for the amazing opportunity to serve you; and we look forward to the 2 nd half of the season where we can continue to create remarkable and memorable moments for you, your friends, and family. A quick glance inside this newsletter will show you the robust activities and events we have planned for your enjoyment in August and the months that follow.

Chris Conner, CCM GM & COO

The front cover of this newsletter shows you a view that I think we sometimes forget is here. The Butler Overlook is such a spectacular place and I hope you take opportunities to visit it and take in all the beauty of the mountains. Did you know the old Kelsey-Hutchinson Trail goes right in front of the overlook? This is also the spot of the Appalachian Divide, which is now denoted with a historical marker (see photo). There is a point as you walk towards the Butler Overlook where all water flows either southwest (ending in the Gulf of Mexico), or southeast (ending in the Atlantic Ocean). Take a look at the marker on your next visit to our community’s remarkable overlook.

I want to officially congratulate our Croquet Director, Brian Lozano, for winning the Canadian Open Golf Croquet Championship in Toronto last month. Brian beat Canada’s top ranked player 7-2 and 7-1 to claim the Championship. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and we are all very happy for Brian. See his article in the following pages for a play by play of his championship victory. Thank you again for your support of the Cullasaja Club and being a special part of our Club’s incredible culture. We firmly believe our members to be the most genuine and friendly group of people on the mountain, and the entire staff counts their blessings each day to be able to serve you and see you enjoy all the Club has to offer. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to make your experience more remarkable and memorable. Best Regards,

Chris Conner, General Manager /COO

Your continued support and enthusiasm drive us to explore new horizons of flavor and create moments that linger in your memory. Here's to a delicious and exciting second half of the season! Cheers, Scott Craig WCMC, Executive Chef FRIED GREEN TOMATOES Fried green tomatoes are a beloved Southern dish that traces its roots back to the United States. The exact origin of this culinary delight is a bit unclear, but it is believed to have originated in the South during the 19th century when tomatoes were brought to the region from Central and South America. Green tomatoes, unripe tomatoes with a firm and tangy flavor, were often leftover at the end of the growing season, prompting resourceful cooks to find ways to make use of them. Frying them in a batter or coating them in cornmeal and then frying them became a popular method to transform these underripe fruits into a delicious and crispy dish. The dish gained broader popularity after the publication of the novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" by Fannie Flagg in 1987. The novel, which tells the story of the Whistle Stop Cafe and its Southern recipes, brought significant attention to this classic Southern delicacy. Later, the novel was adapted into a movie in 1991, further popularizing fried green tomatoes across the United States and beyond. Today, fried green tomatoes are not limited to the South but can be found in various regions and international cuisines. They are cherished for their unique taste and crunchy texture, often served as an appetizer, side dish, or even in sandwiches and burgers.

FROM THE KITCHEN

Recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes: Here's a simple and delicious recipe for making fried green tomatoes: Ingredients: 4-5 green tomatoes, sliced into 1/4-inch thick rounds 1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup cornmeal 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a bit of heat) 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk) 1 large egg Vegetable oil, for frying Instructions: -In a shallow dish, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well to create the coating mixture. -In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until well combined. This will serve as the wet mixture. -Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C). -Dip each tomato slice into the wet mixture, allowing any excess liquid to drip off, and then coat it thoroughly with the flour-cornmeal mixture. -Carefully place the coated tomato slices in the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the tomatoes in batches if necessary. -Fry the tomatoes for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. -Sprinkle a little extra salt on top while they're still hot, if desired. -Serve the fried green tomatoes as a delightful appetizer, side dish, or in sandwiches with toppings

like lettuce, bacon, and remoulade sauce for a tasty twist. -Enjoy the Southern goodness of fried green tomatoes!

Note: Be cautious when frying, as the oil can get very hot. Always use a deep skillet with high edges and consider using a splatter guard to prevent oil splashes. Additionally, you can experiment with various dipping sauces to accompany the fried green tomatoes, such as ranch dressing, aioli, or hot sauce, based on your preferences.

GOLF UPDATE – CHARLES BEURMANN

Halfway Point The halfway point is upon us, but we still have so many exciting opportunities planned to create 2023 memories! We had amazing weather on July 4 th week and the course was full of friends and family. Flag Day crowned six winners, but no one made it farther than Herb Walter. Herb was able to plant his flag next to the green on hole number one, making him the only one to finish an extra hole. Congratulations, Mr. Walter! Our first Sunday Couples event was held on July 9 th . We had 64 players, but the stellar play from Rick & Georgie Taylor and David

Charles Beurmann Head Golf Professional

& Linda Stetson was just too much for the rest to handle, including Steve & Sue Mendenhall and E.G. & Marianne Lassiter who finished just ½ shot behind our fearless leaders! Thank you to all who continue to support Sunday Couples. Our Second Saturday Night Shoot Out was a roaring success. We had 14 teams, which is our most ever! Great play was had by all, but Greg Pater, and his guest, Robin Kippenberger, took down a stout field of competitors! On hole eight, their team was in the middle of the fairway and Greg was trying to talk Robin into hitting another club; and Robin said “NO”, I have the club I want! Robin proceeded to stick his wedge shot inside 6 feet which lead to a birdie on the hole. I knew they were going to be too much to handle the rest of the way. This event continues to gain interest, so please don’t forget to sign up as we will be capping the event with 12 teams going forward. The Men’s Invitational was a massive success! The weather wasn’t ideal on Thursday, but we were able to switch our match rotations to 1-2-2 from 2-2-1 so we were able to get the tournament in with good weather. We had Carolina Blue weather on Friday and Saturday despite wet conditions from the 2 inches of rain on Wednesday and Thursday. Tom Nelson and his team did such an amazing job getting the course manicured when weather allowed. Victor & Roger Fransen proved to be too much for the remaining teams, once again, making the three-peat possible! They have now been crowned Champions in 2017, 2020, & 2023. Watch out everyone, 2026 will be here before you know it and Victor & Roger seem to be really hot every three years. I have run this event 10 times and have never seen a more complete putting performance. Roger Fransen made impressive putts on three consecutive holes to ensure victory, including a 30+ foot par putt on 18, complete with a Tiger like fist pump and Roar. Well done men, no one gave it to you; it was earned! See you on the course! Charles Beurmann, Head Golf Professional

FROM THE GREEN – TOM NELSON

It’s always a good feeling to see your hard work and investments payoff. This summer, the rains have been smaller events, typically ½” or less, which are not significant enough to cause bunker issues. We know the new bunker drainage works but it really hadn’t been put to the test until the morning of the practice round of the Men’s Invitational. Overnight we received over 1” of rain in a very short period of time. While we were disappointed that the rain fell at such an inopportune time, we were happy to see that the investment in the new Capillary Flow bunkers paid off. The old bunkers on 10- 15 were washed out and the crew was mostly dedicated to shoveling up and smoothing out the sand. This is a

very labor-intensive process that would only be noticeable if it were not done. Instead of spending time working on more detail work that creates a more memorable experience, a large part of the crew spent the morning hours working on something that goes virtually undetected. The new bunkers had virtually zero wash, what little sand movement that did occur was easily repaired with nothing more than your typical bunker rake and about 5 minutes time. Old Bunker Showing Wash Out Tom Nelson Golf Course Superintendent

15|Page

FROM THE GREEN

New Bunker While this was not a huge rain event, you can clearly see the difference between the old vs. new bunkers. Prior to the new bunkers we would have had to delay starting times to allow the crew enough time to get the bunkers back in shape. That’s a lot of wasted time tending to a hazard and creating an inconvenience to the membership. The remaining bunkers are scheduled to be rebuilt this offseason and we are looking forward to being able to provide the membership a superior golf course. As a reminder, the construction crew will begin mobilization the week of October 16 and will be breaking ground on the back 9 on October 23 rd . We will keep the front open as long as possible; however, the back nine will be closed until May 1, 2024.

CROQUET NEWS – BRIAN LOZANO

It is hard to believe that August is here! The first half of the season has been a blur and we had a great July in our croquet program. We kicked off the month with our 4th of July Patriots Play Croquet Mixer. An enthusiastic crowd all dressed in red, white, and blue took to the lawns and enjoyed connecting with friends and family while exchanging friendly shots through our not so friendly hoops. The Patriots Croquet event was followed by an away Interclub match against Country Club of Sapphire Valley. Our members were welcomed to two beautifully manicured lawns and very solid competition. After three hard fought rounds, our Cullasaja team came out victorious! Our doubles teams showed great composure and effective communication to ensure the win on that day. After the match, the CCSV members invited

Brian Lozano Croquet Director

us to their new outdoor veranda for a nice afternoon lunch. We look forward to welcoming them to Cullasaja Club next season. Interclub matches are great opportunities for new and experienced players to visit different Clubs and make new friends who are also croquet players. July was also a big month for our competitive players. Our Club Championships have produced some very exciting matches and absolute classic match-ups. The Ladies’ Singles Championship gave us a final between two members that we’ve all been secretly wanting to see happen, or maybe not so secret. Reigning champion Julie Wright fought her way through her group and back to the final to attempt to retain her title. On the other side, a very dedicated and determined Jacquie Harris earned herself the opportunity to stamp her name for the first time on the Champions’ Board. A crowd came out to see this match, and we were all very entertained by some impressive shooting, risk taking, and execution. Jacquie knew that it wasn’t going to be easy, so she went for it all by taking the longer shots, the higher-risk shots, and it paid off big-time, winning with the tight scoreline of 7 to 5. The next Club Championship was the Men’s Doubles, which turned out to be a well contested tournament. The first round gave us a few unusual results (on paper), when favorites for the title, Tim Wright and Dennis Howard, were served a hard loss against a team

17|Page

CROQUET NEWS

that came out determined to shake things up. Dennis Fisher and Bruce Van Fleet played a confident and straight-forward game to come out with a very comprehensive win. After five rounds, the cream rose to the top, and the final was set between 5-time champions, Clint Dawkins and Victor Fransen, a strong duo with years of experience playing together. They were met by another strong team, new singles Club Champion, Tim Wright, and veteran former Club Champion Dennis Howard. The finalists were met with very tough hoops, and fast lawns. Both teams were neck and neck throughout the entire game, exchanging hoop after hoop, until the very end, when things really started to get serious, where mistakes can be fatal. At a score of 8-8, Clint Dawkins finally gets an opportunity to get closer to the winning 10th hoop. He sets up, everyone held their breath, shoots… the ball catches too much of the hoop and rejected it away, leaving Dennis Howard with a straight-forward 3 footer… boom, runs the hoop clean and ends up right in front of the next hoop. Both opponent balls shoot at it and miss. Dennis from just under a foot, seals the win, 10 to 8. Towards the end of July and into August, we are looking forward to keeping the ball rolling. The Ladies Doubles (July 31- Aug 1) is coming up, followed by the Club Mixed Doubles Championship (Aug 14-15). Please make sure to contact me to sign up to participate. Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to share an important victory for me this season. Last month I traveled to Toronto, Canada to compete in the 2023 Croquet Canada Open Championship. Players from all over North America and the UK met at the North Toronto Lawn Bowling and Croquet Club to vie for this title, which has been a top tier event in North America for over 20 years. The event offered two full-sized lawns and a super friendly group of club members and volunteers, who provided lunches, refreshments, and a never-ending supply of ice-cold towels (it was hot). Of course, the competition was tough, with returning 5-time champion, and Canada’s #1 nationally ranked player John Richardson. We met for the first time on day 1 in the block, and he beat me 7 5. I struggled the first day and I couldn’t get the speed right (they were running slow). I dropped two games that I probably shouldn’t have. By day 2, I adjusted, and as soon as I did, I began to hit everything center-ball. After that, I turned it up and I didn’t look back for a second. I felt the opportunity was there, and I wasn’t letting it go, I was not coming back without the victory. I showed up to play the final ready to show what I could do and kept my opponent under control. I ran away

with it in two straight sets, 7/2 and 7/1. Thank you all for your continued support. I am proud to represent Cullasaja Club, and prouder to share with new croquet friends abroad what a wonderful club and membership I have the pleasure to serve and create lifetime memories with. Let’s keep this going! Brian Lozano, Croquet Director

TENNIS NEWS – CHRIS HARRIS

MID-SEASON 2023 TENNIS REMAINS VIBRANT Warmer temperatures of July brought out plenty of tennis and pickleball playing members this season. We’ve had over 1,000 hours of play on our courts in the last month, with close to 100 people coming out on the Saturday of 4 th of July weekend alone. The growth in Clay Court Pickleball at the Club, plus the addition of Heather’s tennis clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays have been strong contributors to the increase in activity. Hitting on the ball machine also remains a popular activity as it doesn’t require another player to get in a nice work out. Our version of Clay Court Pickleball remains strong with plenty of participation often using 2 courts for play. Please note that we have purchased 6 additional loaner clay court pickleball racquets in different weights. So, everyone should be able to find a paddle that suits their needs or preference.

Chris Harris Tennis Director

CLINICS REMAIN FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST: Heather’s clinics have been very popular for both male and female tennis players, and thus, the clinics will continue to be offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Please continue to use the Member App to sign up for these clinics a couple of days in advance, or stop in the Tennis Shop to speak with Heather.

DOUBLES TIP OF THE MONTH: “How to avoid having to hit Lobs” Most players hate having to hit lobs because they get out of their comfort zone. If you are one of them, here's a simple tip to avoid getting lobbed: hit your ground-strokes and approach shots with backspin. This makes it hard for opponents to get under the ball and hit it high because the ball stays low off the ground and the backwards spin does not favor lobs. It climbs down their racquet face somewhat. Also, good lobbers love to park themselves on the baseline because it’s easy to hit lobs from this position. You must take a lobber out of their comfort zone. You can jam them with your return by hitting the ball right in front of them so they can’t get into position to swing or hit a shorter ball that makes it harder for them to get into position to hit a winning lob. Just don’t hit the ball too short as that would bring them into net for a volley or overhead smash and lastly, don’t close the net too tight on an approach shot. THE RED AND BLUE TENNIS TOURNAMENT & HAPPY HOUR WAS A BIG HIT! Paul Pavlis’ Red Team, with a team score of 70, beat Jan Pavlis’ Blue Team, with a score of 65. Rather than prizes for the winners, the losing team hosted a Happy Hour with homemade appetizers for tournament participants on the Activity Center deck. All that joined us really loved the new event, especially the Red Team.

injuries, sports injuries, temporomandibular joint pain, and upper back and neck pain. People also enjoy massage for overall well-being, and it often produces feelings of caring, comfort, and connection (Mayo Clinic, 2022). Did you know, at Cullasaja Club we offer a wide variety of massage treatments? These include Relaxation Massage, Deep Tissue, Ashiatsu, Thai Yoga, Pregnancy Massage, Hot Stones, and Cupping. In addition, we also offer spa services such as Body Brush and Body Scrub. What follows is a more detailed explanation of each massage treatment and spa service . Relaxation Massage - uses light to medium pressure to relax the body and mind. Long, gliding strokes

are used in the direction of the blood returning to the heart. Relaxation Massage helps relax muscles and increase circulation. Deep Tissue Massage - uses firm pressure to relieve muscle tension in deeper layers of connective tissue. Forearms, elbows, and thumbs are used to apply deeper pressure in areas of focus. Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage - uses light to deep pressure. Ashiatsu stems from the Japanese meaning “foot pressure”. Feet are used to massage the neck, back, arms and legs with the client lying face down and the massage therapist either seated or standing holding onto mounted bars.

MASSAGE WITH MANU & ELIZABETH

Thai Yoga Massage - combines stretching techniques and massage strokes with the client fully relaxed. The client wears loosely fitted clothes on a massage table or Thai Yoga Mat. Thai Yoga massage sometimes includes client-assisted stretches.

Pregnancy Massage - is performed sideling when the client is past the first trimester. Pillows and bolsters are used to keep the client comfortable. Pressure is applied to the level of the client’s comfort.

Hot Stone Massage - incorporates warm stones into a Relaxation or Deep Tissue Massage. Stones are placed on the back, palms, and under the neck with the localized heat and weight of stones aiding in muscle relaxation. Warm stones can be utilized to apply deeper pressure in areas of focus.

Cupping - incorporates suction cups into a Relaxation or Deep Tissue Massage. Suction cups are used to move connective tissue to help with inflammation, circulation, relaxation, and scar tissue. Cups are continuously moved to avoid broken blood vessels that leave the notable dark rings. Body Polish/Brush - uses a soft brush to remove dead skin and increase circulation. It can be added to any massage treatment and is specifically recommended before a body scrub. Body Scrub - exfoliates and softens your skin. We focus on the back, hands, and feet. A body scrub to these areas can be applied to any massage treatment and should be combined with a body polish. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a massage treatment, please contact Cullasaja Wellness at 828-526-2939 or email wellness@cullasaja-club.com.
